How do I upload files to S3 without the console?
SHORT ANSWER
Uploading is free whichever way you do it, and there are four ways: a command line, an upload link or form for outsiders, SFTP for partners, or a workspace with drag and drop.
The lesson 5 film is on chapter 1.
The four ways
- The AWS CLI, the command line. One command copies a file or syncs a whole folder, splits big files into pieces and retries the ones that fail. A single file can be up to 5 TB.
- A presigned POST, an upload form on a web page, or an upload link. Lets an outsider send a file straight to the bucket with no Amazon access, with size limits built in.
- AWS Transfer Family, SFTP in front of the bucket, for partners who expect it.
- A workspace with uploads built in, where drag and drop lands in the right folder under the person’s own sign-in.
What each costs
- $0
- uploading itself, plus $0.005 per 1,000 files for the upload requests
- $216a month
- an SFTP endpoint from Amazon, billed by the hour whether anyone uses it or not
- $3,500a year
- BucketDesk Ultra, the plan with uploads, for a whole workspace
