Document processing cost per page: OCR, AI and S3 explained

Learn how to calculate document processing cost per page, separate OCR from AI token charges, and budget for files stored in S3.

The short version

Define the processing task before quoting a cost per page. Use page rates for page-billed services, token rates for model inference, and measured usage to calculate an effective per-page cost.

Document processing does not have one universal cost per page. OCR services can charge by the page and feature, while document AI can charge for input and output tokens. For files stored in S3, storage and request charges are separate from processing charges.

BucketDesk does not define document AI as a flat per-page fee in its current plan configuration. Document AI is an Ultra capability, with model usage running through the customer’s connected Amazon Bedrock role. Estimate the subscription and AWS usage separately.

What does “processing a page” include?

A page can be scanned for text, parsed for tables, summarized, or included in a conversation. Each task uses different services and billing units. Comparing prices without specifying the task can hide most of the real cost.

Amazon Textract publishes page-based prices for its document-analysis features. Amazon Bedrock publishes model-specific pricing, including token-based inference. Do not apply an OCR page price to a model conversation simply because both read a PDF.

How do you calculate an effective cost per page?

Choose a representative batch and a defined task, then divide that task’s total cost by the number of pages processed. Keep infrastructure and subscription allocation explicit so someone else can reproduce the estimate.

For illustration, suppose a 1,000-page batch incurs $6 in OCR, $4 in model inference and $2 in other processing charges. The total is $12, or $0.012 per page. These are hypothetical inputs demonstrating the calculation, not AWS or BucketDesk rates.

effective cost per page = total cost for the defined task / pages processed
example: $12 / 1,000 pages = $0.012 per page

Why can two 20-page PDFs cost different amounts?

Page count does not determine how much text or image content a model receives. A short slide deck and a dense report can produce different input usage. Output length, model choice and the conversation history included in follow-up questions also affect the estimate.

If each question sends the document again, ten questions can cost more than one question about the same file. Caching can alter that calculation where the selected model and request support it; measure the actual workflow rather than assuming a cache hit.

What other charges belong in the budget?

Separate ongoing storage from the incremental cost of one processing job. A file already stored in S3 can continue generating storage charges regardless of whether anyone asks it a question.

  • S3 storage and object requests
  • Retrieval or restore charges for archived objects
  • Applicable data transfer and KMS requests
  • OCR or extraction services used by your chosen pipeline
  • Bedrock inference and any applicable cache charges
  • The workspace subscription, if allocating a total operating cost

How should you estimate BucketDesk document AI?

Use the model selected for the connection and compare its current AWS pricing with a sample of real questions. The current application estimates document-chat usage from token counts and configured model rates. An estimate helps with planning; your AWS bill remains the billing record.

The solution

Work with your S3 files in BucketDesk

Use BucketDesk document AI when colleagues need to ask questions about supported files already in S3. Budget the Ultra subscription separately from AWS processing, and test a small representative batch before projecting monthly spend.

Amazon Quick Suite for documents in S3: what it indexes, what it costs, and when you don't need it

AWS now sells Amazon Quick Suite instead of Amazon Q Business. If you want it to answer questions about files in your bucket, here is what you sign up for and what it costs.Quick Suite tiers and the $250 infrastructure fee, pooled index GB and $5/GB overage, the Enterprise prerequisite for S3 knowledge bases, same-Region and ACL-at-creation constraints, 500 MB file and 30 MB extracted-text limits, daily sync, and the per-document alternative.

Amazon S3 storage classes: which one for which business file

Every file in S3 sits in a storage class that decides what it costs and how fast it opens. Here is which class fits which kind of file, in plain terms.Class codes, the two deciding questions, a per-file-type map, --storage-class on upload, copy-in-place to change class, a waterfall lifecycle rule with ObjectSizeGreaterThan, the 128 KB default, the 94-day ordering rule, and why reads keep Intelligent-Tiering objects warm.

How to reduce Amazon S3 costs: the three settings that cut most bills

The S3 bill is usually high for three boring reasons. Each one is a setting on the bucket, and each one can be checked and fixed without touching a file.NoncurrentVersionExpiration with NewerNoncurrentVersions, AbortIncompleteMultipartUpload, Intelligent-Tiering with optional archive tiers, the 128 KB rule, worked numbers at us-east-1 list prices, and how to read Cost Explorer by usage type.
